Developmental editing is the development of a publication project from an early stage. This includes developing the concept and identifying the content and resources needed to produce the project.
Project management often goes hand in hand with developmental editing. This includes the management of resources to bring a project to completion. Examples of project management responsibilities include: budget, sub-contractors, printing.
Structural editing is editing to assess and shape material to improve its organization and content.
Stylistic editing is editing to clarify meaning, improve flow, and smooth language. This level of editing also addresses plain language.
Copy editing is editing to ensure correctness, consistency, accuracy, and completeness. This includes editing for grammar, spelling, punctuation and other mechanics of style.
Proofreading is examining material after layout to correct errors in textual and visual elements.

Document design is the organization and presentation of text and images in a visually pleasing manner to effectively communicate a message. Document design utilizes design software (Adobe InDesign) to produce the result, ready for print or online publication.
